On May 25, 2020, African American citizen George Floyd died in Minneapolis when police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly ten minutes while Floyd repeated "I can't breathe". The video of the killing, shared globally, triggered the largest racial protest movement since the 1960s: Black Lives Matter spread to more than 60 countries. Chauvin was sentenced to 22 years in prison.
On May 25, 1977, "Star Wars" by George Lucas was released in the US — it grossed $775 million in its first worldwide run, making it the highest-grossing film in history at the time — and revolutionised cinema with its special effects, marketing and expanded narrative universe. Today the Star Wars franchise is worth more than $70 billion.
On May 25, 1963, 32 independent African states founded the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — the continent's first continental organisation. The OAU, whose principal objective was decolonisation and economic cooperation, was replaced in 2002 by the African Union (AU), modelled on the European Union. May 25 is Africa Day.
