On May 23, 1618, Catholic officials of the King of Bohemia were thrown from a window of Prague Castle by Protestant nobles — the so-called "Defenestration of Prague" — in protest against restrictions on religious freedoms. The episode was the direct trigger of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the most devastating conflict in Europe until World War I, which killed between 8 and 12 million people.

On May 23, 1934, outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were ambushed and shot dead by law enforcement officers on a rural road in Louisiana, after almost two years of robbing banks and killing police across the southern US. The bodies of Bonnie and Clyde and their bullet-riddled car became one of the strangest icons of Great Depression America.

On May 23, 1949, the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany (Grundgesetz), the constitution of the new West Germany, came into force. The Basic Law, designed to prevent a repetition of Nazism, established a federal state, separation of powers, inalienable fundamental rights and eternity clauses preventing their modification. It remains today the constitution of reunified Germany.
