On June 6, 1944 — D-Day — Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy (France) in the largest amphibious operation in history: more than 150,000 soldiers, 6,939 ships and 11,590 aircraft. Operation Overlord was the beginning of the liberation of Nazi-occupied Western Europe. The beaches were: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Casualties on the first day exceeded 10,000.

On June 6, 1799, poet Alexander Pushkin was born in Moscow — considered the father of modern Russian literature. His works — Eugene Onegin, Boris Godunov, The Captain's Daughter — established modern Russian as a literary language and marked the beginning of Russian Romanticism. Pushkin died on February 10, 1837, at 37, in a duel defending his wife's honour. June 6 is Russian Language Day at the UN.

On June 6, 1984, the Indian army stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar — the holiest site in Sikhism — in Operation Blue Star, to expel separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers. Between 500 and 3,000 people died. In retaliation, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards assassinated her on October 31 of that same year.
