June 20 is World Refugee Day, established by the UN in 2001 on the 50th anniversary of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees (1951). The number of people forcibly displaced worldwide surpassed 100 million in 2022 — the highest figure since World War II — including refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons, partly due to the war in Ukraine and other crises.
On June 20, 1789, the deputies of the Third Estate of the French Estates-General, locked out of their meeting hall on the orders of King Louis XVI, gathered in the tennis court of the Palace of Versailles and swore — the Tennis Court Oath — not to disperse until they had given France a constitution. The oath was the point of no return for the French Revolution.
June 20 is Argentine Flag Day, in honour of General Manuel Belgrano, who died on that day. Belgrano had created the Argentine flag on February 27, 1812, with the sky-blue and white colours inspired by the sky and the Río de la Plata. The flag was first raised on August 23, 1812 at the Libertad Battery in Rosario — the city where Flag Day is commemorated today.
