May 9 has no owner yet

On May 9, 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented the Schuman Declaration, proposing to place the coal and steel of France and Germany under a common supranational authority. The plan, drafted with Jean Monnet, was the seed of the European Coal and Steel Community (1951) and, ultimately, of the European Union. May 9 is Europe Day.

On May 9, 1961, FCC (Federal Communications Commission) chairman Newton Minow delivered his famous "Wasteland" speech to the National Association of Broadcasters, describing American television as a "vast wasteland" of banal entertainment and calling on networks to raise the quality of their programming. The speech remains the most influential ever on the responsibility of the mass media.

On May 9, 1502, Christopher Columbus departed from Cádiz on his fourth and final voyage to the Americas, during which he explored the Central American coast from Honduras to Panama and fruitlessly searched for a passage to the Indian Ocean. Ill and deteriorating, he was rescued in Jamaica in 1504 and returned to Spain, where he died two years later in Valladolid on May 20, 1506, not knowing he had discovered a new continent.
