🇦🇲1918

On May 28, 1918, the Democratic Republic of Armenia declared independence from the Russian Empire, following the fall of Tsarism, becoming the first independent Armenian republic in modern history. The state survived only two years before being absorbed by the USSR in 1920. Armenia regained independence in 1991 following the Soviet dissolution. May 28 is celebrated as Republic Day in Armenia.

1998

On May 28, 1998, Camp Nou in Barcelona hosted the UEFA Champions League final, in which Borussia Dortmund defeated Juventus 3-1. Goals from Karl-Heinz Riedle (2) and Lars Ricken — with a spectacular shot just 16 seconds after coming on — gave Dortmund their first European title. The occasion remains one of the competition's memorable finals.

🎭1738

On May 28, 1738, Pope Clement XII issued the bull In Eminenti — the first official papal condemnation of Freemasonry — forbidding Catholics from joining Masonic lodges under pain of excommunication. The condemnation, reiterated by several subsequent popes, reflects the conflict between the Catholic Church and the Enlightenment ideals of liberty and equality promoted by Masonic lodges in the eighteenth century.
