On June 14, 1982, Argentine forces in the Falkland Islands surrendered to British troops in Puerto Argentino (Port Stanley), ending the Falklands War 74 days after the start of the Argentine invasion. The defeat accelerated the collapse of General Galtieri's dictatorship and the return to democracy in Argentina. The islands remain today a disputed territory between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
On June 14, 1954, US President Dwight Eisenhower added the words "under God" to the American Pledge of Allegiance, changing the original 1892 version during the Cold War to differentiate the US from the atheist USSR. The complete Pledge of Allegiance — with the added phrase — has since been the subject of constitutional debate about the separation of Church and State.
On June 14, 1736, painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard was born in Grasse, France — one of the most important of the French Rococo, known for sensual and light canvases such as "The Swing". Fragonard, who depicted the hedonism of the Ancien Régime nobility, saw his style fall from fashion during the French Revolution and died in obscurity in 1806, though today he is considered a master of European decorative art.
