Historical events & facts — December 31
What happened on December 31?
On December 31, 1999, the world celebrated the arrival of the year 2000 amid panic about the Year 2000 problem (Y2K) — the fear that computer systems would collapse when the year digit changed. Millions of people stayed awake to watch the celebrations in Sydney, Hong Kong, Paris and New York, while technicians worldwide monitored systems. The computing apocalypse never came.
On December 31, 1999, at noon, the United States transferred sovereign control of the Panama Canal to the Republic of Panama, fulfilling the Torrijos-Carter Treaties of 1977. The return of the canal, which the US had controlled since its opening in 1914, was a milestone in Latin American sovereignty, and Panama has since managed the canal with great efficiency.
On December 31, 1600, Queen Elizabeth I of England signed the founding charter of the East India Company, granting it a monopoly on trade with Asia. The company, which eventually had its own army, became the first great corporate monopoly in history and the vanguard of the British Empire in India. Its history prefigures that of modern capitalism.
