What happened on January 14?
On January 14, 1943, Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill began the Casablanca Conference in Morocco, where they agreed on Allied strategy for 1943: invade Sicily, demand "unconditional" surrender from the Axis and prioritise the European theatre over the Pacific. The conference marked the beginning of the strategic coordination that would lead to Allied victory.
On January 14, 1967, the Human Be-In gathered more than 30,000 people in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park in a celebration of peace, love and psychedelia that anticipated the "Summer of Love" of 1967. The event featured performances by Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, and speeches by Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg. It was the first great event of the hippie counterculture.
On January 14, 2005, the ESA's Huygens probe landed on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, becoming the first artificial object to touch down on a moon of an outer planet. The probe transmitted images and data of Titan's atmosphere and surface for 72 minutes after landing, revealing a world with rivers and lakes of liquid methane.
