🍺1920

On January 16, 1920, the Eighteenth Amendment to the US Constitution came into force, prohibiting the production, transport and sale of alcoholic beverages. ⚔️1991

On January 16, 1991, the international coalition led by the US launched Operation Desert Storm against Iraq, beginning the Gulf War to expel the Iraqi army from Kuwait. The conflict, broadcast live by CNN for the first time in history, lasted 42 days and ended with the liberation of Kuwait and the Iraqi withdrawal with massive casualties.

🇸🇱2002

On January 16, 2002, the government of Sierra Leone and the rebel group Revolutionary United Front signed a peace agreement ending eleven years of brutal civil war, during which more than 50,000 people died and tens of thousands were mutilated. Sierra Leone began a slow reconstruction with international aid that made it a model of post-conflict reconciliation.
