On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs presented the first iPhone at the Macworld conference in San Francisco, combining in a single device a phone, an iPod and an internet browser. Jobs described it as "a revolutionary and magical device". The iPhone transformed the phone and personal computing industry, and the concept of the modern smartphone was born that day on the Moscone Center stage.
On January 9, 1905, troops of Tsar Nicholas II fired on a peaceful demonstration of workers marching to the Winter Palace in St Petersburg to deliver a petition to the tsar. Hundreds of people were killed in what is known as "Bloody Sunday". The episode triggered the Revolution of 1905 and planted the seed of the Russian Revolution of 1917.
On January 9, 2005, the Sudan government and the southern rebel movement SPLA signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Nairobi, ending 22 years of civil war that had cost more than two million lives. The agreement included the right to a self-determination referendum for the south, held in 2011, which led to the independence of South Sudan.
