On January 8, 1935, Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi — the musician who fused blues, country and gospel to create modern rock and roll and would become the most important artist in the history of popular music. With more than one billion records sold, Elvis is the best-selling solo artist in history and was nicknamed the "King of Rock and Roll".
On January 8, 1815, General Andrew Jackson defeated the British army at the Battle of New Orleans, the greatest American victory of the War of 1812. The irony: the Treaty of Ghent ending the war had been signed two weeks earlier, but the news had not yet reached New Orleans. Jackson became a national hero and later President of the United States.
On January 8, 1942, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, who despite being diagnosed with a degenerative disease at age 21 became the most celebrated cosmologist of the twentieth century. His research on black holes and Hawking radiation changed modern physics. His book A Brief History of Time (1988) sold more than 25 million copies.
