What happened on January 10?
On January 10, 1920, the Treaty of Versailles came into force and the League of Nations was formally constituted — the first international collective security body in history. The organisation, proposed by President Woodrow Wilson, failed in its goal of maintaining world peace due to the absence of the US and its inability to restrain the totalitarian regimes of the 1930s.
On January 10, 2016, British musician David Bowie died in New York, two days after releasing his final album Blackstar. Bowie, who had kept his terminal illness from the public, was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century: a pioneer of glam rock, white soul and electronic music. His alter ego Ziggy Stardust defined an entire generation.
On January 10, 49 BC, Julius Caesar crossed the river Rubicon — the border separating his province from Italy — at the head of his army, defying the Roman Senate and triggering the Roman Civil War. The action was illegal and amounted to a declaration of war. The phrase "the die is cast" (alea iacta est) attributed to him has endured as a symbol of irreversible decisions.

Jeremiah Sullivan Black was an American statesman and lawyer. He served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania (1851–1857) and as the Court's Chief Justice (1851–1854). He also served in the Cabinet of President James Buchanan, first as Attorney General (1857–1860), and then Secretary of State (1860–1861).

Ann Shoemaker was an American actress who appeared in 70 films and TV movies between 1928 and 1976. She portrayed Sara Roosevelt, mother of Franklin D. Roosevelt, in both the stage and film versions of Sunrise at Campobello.
