🖊️1898

On January 13, 1898, writer Émile Zola published in the newspaper L'Aurore his famous open letter "J'accuse…!" ("I accuse…!"), denouncing the antisemitism of the French army and the unjust conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus. The article, which shook French society, was the greatest act of opinion journalism of the nineteenth century and gave new impetus to the Dreyfus Affair.

🇱🇹1991

On January 13, 1991, the Soviet army attempted to suppress the Lithuanian independence movement by storming the Vilnius TV Tower and shooting at the civilians surrounding it. Fourteen people were killed. The crackdown, broadcast live, generated international outrage and strengthened Lithuanian resolve. Lithuania gained international recognition of its independence in September 1991.

🎬1930

On January 13, 1930, the first Mickey Mouse comic strip was published in American newspapers, a year and a half after the premiere of Steamboat Willie in cinemas. The daily strip, initially drawn by Ub Iwerks and later by Floyd Gottfredson, made Mickey the most recognisable comic character in the world and expanded the mouse's universe beyond the screen.
