What happened on January 27?
On January 27, 1945, the Red Army liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in Poland, finding around 7,000 survivors in a deplorable state. More than 1.1 million people — mostly Jews — had been murdered there. January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, established by the UN in 2005.
On January 27, 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg — the child prodigy who composed his first symphony at age eight and who in his 35 years of life produced more than 600 works, including operas such as Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute. Mozart is considered the greatest musical genius in Western history.
On January 27, 1967, the three astronauts of Apollo 1 — Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee — died in a fire during a launch rehearsal at Cape Canaveral. The accident, caused by a pure oxygen atmosphere and flammable materials, delayed the lunar programme by two years but led to major safety improvements in spacecraft design.
