On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India came into force, proclaiming the country as the world's largest democracy with nearly 400 million citizens. The constitution, drafted mainly by B. R. Ambedkar, abolished the caste system and guaranteed equality for all citizens. January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day in India with a grand parade in New Delhi.
On January 26, 1788, the fleet of Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove and established the first British penal colony in Australia in the region of New South Wales. Australia Day is celebrated on January 26 as the national holiday, though it is a controversial date for indigenous peoples, who call it "Invasion Day".
On January 26, 2001, a devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Indian state of Gujarat, killing more than 20,000 people and destroying the historic centre of the city of Bhuj.
