✍️1809

On January 19, 1809, writer Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston — the father of modern horror and detective fiction. His works — The Raven, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Fall of the House of Usher — founded entire literary genres and exerted an enormous influence on writers such as Baudelaire, Lovecraft and Conan Doyle. He died mysteriously in 1849 aged 40.

On January 19, 1983, Apple unveiled the Lisa, the first commercial personal computer with a graphical user interface and mouse, anticipating the era of user-friendly computing. Although the Lisa failed commercially — it cost $10,000 — its technological innovations were incorporated into the Macintosh launched the following year, which did revolutionise personal computing.

🇷🇺1991

On January 19, 1991, the Soviet army forcibly seized the Lithuanian Interior Ministry building in Vilnius, killing a police officer, in the context of Moscow's attempts to halt Lithuanian independence. The Soviet actions generated unanimous international condemnation and accelerated the process of recognising the independence of the Baltic states.
