On February 9, 1964, the Beatles performed for the first time on American television on The Ed Sullivan Show, before an audience of 73 million people — the largest in US television history up to that point. The performance triggered the "British Invasion" of American music and marked the beginning of the most influential era in rock and roll history.

On February 9, 1881, writer Fyodor Dostoevsky died in St Petersburg aged 59, just days after completing his final novel The Brothers Karamazov. Dostoevsky is considered one of the greatest literary psychologists of all time, whose explorations of guilt, suffering and redemption in works like Crime and Punishment profoundly influenced twentieth-century literature and philosophy.

On February 9, 1900, Bernhard von Bülow delivered a speech in the German Reichstag in which he coined the expression "place in the sun" to demand colonies for Germany, reflecting the aggressive imperialism of Kaiser Wilhelm II. This expansionist foreign policy was one of the factors that contributed to the escalation of European tensions leading to World War I.
