On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison in South Africa after 27 years of imprisonment, in an event watched live by millions of people worldwide. His release was the beginning of the end of apartheid. Four years later, on April 27, 1994, Mandela became the first Black president in the history of South Africa.
