On February 25, 1964, young boxer Cassius Clay defeated world champion Sonny Liston in Miami and was proclaimed world heavyweight champion. The following day, Clay announced his conversion to Islam and adopted the name Muhammad Ali. Considered the greatest boxer of all time, Ali added a political dimension to his sporting career by refusing to fight in Vietnam on religious grounds.
