On February 28, 1953, scientists James Watson and Francis Crick announced at the Eagle pub in Cambridge that they had discovered the structure of DNA, the double helix. The discovery, published in Nature on April 25, revolutionised modern biology and medicine. In 1962 they received the Nobel Prize in Medicine, along with Maurice Wilkins, while their colleague Rosalind Franklin was unjustly excluded.

On February 28, 1922, the United Kingdom declared the end of the British Protectorate over Egypt, formally recognising its independence, though with significant reservations that maintained British control over the Suez Canal and the country's defence. Full Egyptian independence would not be achieved until 1952 with the Free Officers' Revolution that overthrew King Farouk and brought Nasser to power.

On February 28, 1983, the final episode of the television series MASH* — set in a field hospital during the Korean War — was broadcast, to an audience of 106 million American viewers, making it the most-watched episode in US television history for decades. The series, aired from 1972 to 1983, was known for its humour and anti-war critique.
