On February 26, 1993, a truck bomb exploded in the underground car park of the World Trade Center in New York, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000. The attack, perpetrated by a jihadist cell linked to Al-Qaeda, was the first major Islamist terrorist attack on American soil. Eight years later, on September 11, 2001, the towers were destroyed in a far more devastating attack.
On February 26, 1919, US President Woodrow Wilson signed the law creating the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, protecting one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on the planet. The Colorado gorge, carved over millions of years, is 446 kilometres long and more than 1,800 metres deep. The Grand Canyon has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
On February 26, 1932, Johnny Cash was born in Tupelo, Mississippi — the country and rock singer known as "The Man in Black". With his deep voice and themes of redemption, sin and solitude, Cash influenced American music for five decades. His recordings at Folsom Prison (1968) and the album American Recordings (1994) are considered masterpieces of the genre.
