On February 23, 1981, Civil Guard lieutenant colonel Antonio Tejero burst into the Spanish Congress of Deputies with a gun drawn during the investiture vote for Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, in an attempted coup. On February 23, 1945, six US Marines — three of them Native Americans — raised the American flag on the summit of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, in a photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal that became the most reproduced photograph in history and symbol of the American war effort. The image served as the basis for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington.
On February 23, 1987, astronomers worldwide detected supernova SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud — the closest naked-eye stellar explosion observed since the seventeenth century. It was the first time neutrinos from a supernova were detected on Earth, confirming fundamental astrophysics theories and opening the era of neutrino astronomy.
