On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine — the largest conventional war in Europe since World War II. The Russian army attacked from the north, east and south, attempting to take Kyiv within days. Ukrainian resistance, led by President Zelensky, thwarted the initial objectives. The war triggered the largest refugee crisis in Europe since 1945.
On February 24, 1821, General Agustín de Iturbide proclaimed the Plan of Iguala, establishing the principles of Mexican independence: Catholicism as the only religion, independence from Spain, and equality between Creoles and Peninsulares. The plan was accepted by Guerrero's insurgents and royalist troops, and Mexico proclaimed independence on September 27 of that same year.
On February 24, 1868, the US House of Representatives approved the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson — the first American president to undergo this process. Johnson was accused of violating the Tenure of Office Act by dismissing his Secretary of War without Senate approval. The Senate acquitted him by a single vote. Presidential impeachment trials remained exceptional for a century.
