On February 22, 1732, George Washington was born in Pope's Creek, Virginia — first President of the United States of America (1789-1797) and commander in chief of the revolutionary army that defeated Great Britain in the War of Independence. Washington refused to be king, established the precedent of two-term limits and is considered the "Father of the Nation".
On February 22, 1997, Scotland's Roslin Institute announced it had successfully cloned an adult sheep using the nucleus of a mammary gland cell. The sheep, named Dolly, was the first mammal cloned from an adult cell, revolutionising biology and sparking an intense global debate on the ethics of cloning and the possibility of cloning human beings.
On February 22, 2011, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi delivered a rambling speech from Tripoli promising to fight rebels house by house. After 42 years in power, his regime was crumbling before the advance of rebel forces backed by NATO. Gaddafi was captured and lynched on October 20, 2011 in Sirte, his hometown, ending his dictatorship.
