On March 4, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as the thirty-second US President amid the Great Depression, promising the New Deal to pull the country out of crisis. In his inaugural address he delivered the famous line "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Roosevelt was the only American president elected four times and governed until his death in 1945.

On March 4, 2018, former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok in Salisbury, England, in an attack attributed by the British government to Russian military intelligence (GRU). The incident triggered the expulsion of more than 150 Russian diplomats from Western countries and sharpened tensions between Russia and NATO allies.

On March 4, 1152, Frederick I Barbarossa was crowned King of the Romans at Aachen cathedral, beginning one of the most influential reigns of the Holy Roman Empire. Barbarossa attempted to unify imperial power against German princes and Italian city-states, and led the Third Crusade alongside Richard the Lionheart. He drowned in an Anatolian river in 1190.
