What happened on March 5?
On March 5, 1953, Joseph Stalin, Secretary General of the Communist Party of the USSR for 29 years, died. Under his rule, the USSR industrialised, defeated Nazi Germany and became a nuclear superpower, but his policies cost the lives of between 6 and 20 million people in the gulags, forced collectivisations and political purges. His death opened the process of de-Stalinisation.
On March 5, 1946, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, the speech in which he coined the term "Iron Curtain" to describe the dividing line between free Europe and Soviet-dominated Europe. The speech, which Stalin called a declaration of war, is considered the official beginning of the Cold War.
On March 5, 1770, British soldiers opened fire on a crowd of colonists in Boston, killing five people, in the episode known as the Boston Massacre. Lawyer John Adams — future president — defended the soldiers at trial and secured their acquittal. However, the incident, exploited propagandistically by Paul Revere, was one of the triggers of the American Revolution.

While he was a member of the Toronto Argonauts, the team won the Grey Cup championship twice.

J. B. Lenoir was an American blues guitarist and singer-songwriter, active in the Chicago blues scene in the 1950s and 1960s. In The Encyclopedia of Popular Music he is described as both an "extrovert R&B man in the leopard-skin jacket who chanted infectious trifles" and a "thoughtful and intelligent writer of starkly honest blues songs."

Anthony Maxwell Rundle AO was an Australian politician who served as Premier of Tasmania from March 1996 until September 1998. He succeeded Ray Groom and was succeeded himself by Jim Bacon. He was a Liberal who held the seat of Braddon between 1986 and 2002. A former journalist, he was married to Caroline Watt. He had twin daughters from his first marriage.
