On March 12, 1989, British scientist Tim Berners-Lee submitted at CERN in Geneva a proposal titled "Information Management: A Proposal", describing a distributed hypertext system that would become the World Wide Web (WWW). His supervisor called it "vague but exciting". Berners-Lee implemented the first web server and browser in 1990 and released the code for free in 1993.

On March 12, 1947, US President Harry Truman announced the Truman Doctrine to Congress, by which the US committed to supporting economically and militarily democratic governments threatened by communism, beginning with Greece and Turkey. The doctrine was the cornerstone of American foreign policy throughout the Cold War and drove the creation of NATO.

On March 12, 1938, German troops crossed the Austrian border and Hitler proclaimed the Anschluss — the annexation of Austria into the Third Reich. Hitler, born in Austria, was greeted with enthusiasm in Vienna. The League of Nations and Western powers took no action.
