On March 10, 1959, a popular uprising broke out in Lhasa, capital of Tibet, against Chinese occupation. The Dalai Lama fled to India, where he established the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala. Chinese repression caused thousands of deaths and the destruction of monasteries. March 10 is celebrated as Tibetan Uprising Day by the Tibetan exile community.

On March 10, 1864, bacteriologist Élie Metchnikoff was born in Minsk, then Russia — he who described the phenomenon of phagocytosis — the ability of certain body cells to engulf and destroy bacteria — and shared the 1908 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Paul Ehrlich. Metchnikoff was also a pioneer in the study of intestinal flora and its relationship with longevity.

On March 10, 1629, King Charles I of England dissolved Parliament and began the eleven-year period of personal rule known as the "Eleven Years' Tyranny". The decision, motivated by conflicts over taxation and religion, led to the English Civil War (1642-1651), the king's execution and the establishment of Cromwell's Republic.
