On March 24, 1882, German physician Robert Koch announced before the Berlin Physiological Society the discovery of the tuberculosis bacillus (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) — the bacterium causing a disease that at the time killed one in seven Europeans. The discovery, which earned him the 1905 Nobel Prize, initiated the era of modern medical microbiology. March 24 is World Tuberculosis Day.

On March 24, 2015, co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed Germanwings flight 4U9525 into the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board. The investigation revealed that Lubitz suffered from severe depression and had been declared unfit to fly by his doctor, but concealed the diagnosis from the airline. The event sparked a global debate on pilots' mental health.

On March 24, 1976, the Argentine Armed Forces overthrew President María Estela Martínez de Perón in a coup that installed the Military Junta led by General Jorge Rafael Videla. The dictatorship, which lasted until 1983, was responsible for the disappearance of between 10,000 and 30,000 people during the period known as the "National Reorganisation Process" or simply "El Proceso".
