💧1993

March 22 is World Water Day, established by the UN in 1993 to draw attention to the importance of fresh water and the need for its sustainable management. More than 2 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Climate change is worsening water scarcity in numerous regions of the planet, making water one of the strategic resources of the twenty-first century.

⚗️1895

On March 22, 1895, brothers Louis and Auguste Lumière gave in Paris the first private screening of the cinematograph, the device they invented to record and project moving images. The first public screening took place on December 28 of that year at the Grand Café on the Boulevards. The Lumières, pioneers of documentary film, created the modern film industry.

📜1765

On March 22, 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, imposing direct taxes on legal documents, newspapers and playing cards in the American colonies. It was the first time Britain attempted to collect direct taxes in the colonies without their consent. The colonial reaction — "no taxation without representation" — laid the ideological foundations of the American Revolution.
