On April 5, 1722, Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen arrived at a remote Pacific island on Easter Sunday, naming it Easter Island. The island, inhabited by the Rapa Nui people, contains the mysterious moai — megalithic statues up to 21 metres tall and weighing 80 tonnes — whose function and construction method remain subjects of scientific debate. The island was ceded to Chile in 1888.

On April 5, 1994, guitarist and singer Kurt Cobain, leader of Nirvana, was found dead at his home in Seattle at age 27. Cobain had shot himself three days earlier. His death symbolised the end of the grunge era and the spirit of Generation X. Nirvana had revolutionised rock with albums like Nevermind (1991) and In Utero (1993), and was the last great mass rock movement.

On April 5, 1955, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill submitted his resignation at age 80, ending his second term as UK premier (1951-1955). Churchill, who had already been Prime Minister from 1940 to 1945, became the symbol of British resistance during World War II. He died on January 24, 1965 and was the last private citizen to receive a state funeral.
