🚀1961

On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to travel to space, orbiting the Earth for 108 minutes aboard the Vostok 1 capsule. Gagarin, a young 27-year-old pilot, became the greatest hero of the space age. April 12 is celebrated as Cosmonautics Day in Russia and as the UN International Day of Human Space Flight.

🚀1981

On April 12, 1981, the space shuttle Columbia made its first flight with crew John Young and Robert Crippen, inaugurating NASA's Space Shuttle programme. The Columbia was the first of five operational shuttles and the first to be reused. The shuttle programme, which lasted 30 years, completed 135 missions before its retirement in 2011.

🇺🇸1861

On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter in the harbour of Charleston, South Carolina, starting the American Civil War. The federal fort surrendered the following day. The bombardment was the formal trigger for the most destructive war in American history, which would last four years and cause more than 600,000 deaths on both sides.
