🚀1970

On April 11, 1970, NASA launched Apollo 13 toward the Moon. Two days later, on April 13, one of the oxygen tanks in the service module exploded. The three astronauts — Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise — used the lunar module Aquarius as a lifeboat and returned safely to Earth on April 17. The failed mission became the greatest example of space ingenuity under pressure.

⚖️1961

On April 11, 1961, the trial of Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann began in Jerusalem — captured by the Israeli Mossad in Argentina the previous year. Eichmann, one of the organisers of the Holocaust, was sentenced to death and executed on June 1, 1962. The trial, followed worldwide, was a milestone in global awareness of the Holocaust and genocide as an international crime.

🇸🇮1814

On April 11, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated for the first time at Fontainebleau, ending the First French Empire after defeat against the Sixth Coalition and the occupation of Paris. He was exiled to the island of Elba. Ten months later he escaped, restarted the war in the period known as the "Hundred Days" and was finally defeated at Waterloo on June 18, 1815.
