On April 10, 1912, the *RMS Titanic* set sail from *Southampton* on its maiden voyage to *New York*, with more than 2,200 passengers and crew on board. The ship, considered the largest and safest in the world, struck an iceberg four days later on April 14, and sank in under 3 hours killing more than 1,500 people. The *Titanic* disaster changed maritime safety regulations forever.
