On April 19, 1775, the "shot heard round the world" was fired at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, when colonial Minutemen clashed with British troops, formally starting the American Revolution. The colonists had been warned the night before by Paul Revere. The battles of Lexington and Concord were the first armed confrontation of the War of Independence.

On April 19, 1995, a truck bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, including 19 children — the largest terrorist attack in American history until 9/11. The perpetrator was Gulf War veteran Timothy McVeigh, motivated by hatred of the federal government. McVeigh was executed in 2001.

On April 19, 1810, the Caracas Town Council removed Spanish Captain General Vicente Emparan and installed a Supreme Junta of Caracas to govern in the name of King Ferdinand VII, held prisoner by Napoleon. This act, known as "April 19", is considered the beginning of Venezuela's independence process and is today its second national holiday, after July 5 (formal Independence, 1811).
