On March 6, 1957, Ghana became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from a colonial power, under the leadership of pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah. Ghana's independence inspired the liberation movement across Africa and marked the beginning of the decades of decolonisation. Nkrumah became the leading voice of pan-Africanism and was deposed in a coup in 1966.

On March 6, 1475, artist Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in Caprese, Italy — one of the most complete geniuses in the history of Western art. Painter, sculptor, architect and poet, his masterworks — the Sistine Chapel ceiling, David, the Pietà and the dome of St Peter's — remain unsurpassed landmarks of human art. He lived to 88 and worked until just weeks before his death.

The active ingredient had been synthesised by Felix Hoffmann the previous year. Aspirin is used today as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet agent — one of the most researched and versatile drugs in modern medicine.
