On January 29, 1886, German engineer Karl Benz patented the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, considered the world's first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine. On January 29, 1845, Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven" was published in The American Review — the most famous work in American horror literature. The poem, with its celebrated refrain "Nevermore" spoken by the raven, was an immediate success and catapulted Poe's fame, though the author received only $9 for it. It is one of the most memorised poems in the English language.
