On January 30, 1948, Indian political and spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead in New Delhi by Hindu extremist Nathuram Godse, just five months after Indian independence. Gandhi, the world symbol of non-violent resistance and architect of Indian independence, was 78 years old. His death shocked the world and a national day of mourning was declared.
On January 30, 1933, German President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany, believing he could control him. The appointment marked the beginning of the Third Reich. Within a year, Hitler had eliminated all political opposition, suppressed civil rights and begun the persecution of Jews that would culminate in the Holocaust.
On January 30, 1969, the Beatles gave their last public concert on the rooftop of the Apple Corps building on Savile Row in London, in what is known as the "rooftop concert". The impromptu show, which lasted 42 minutes, was interrupted by police. Seven months later, the quartet split definitively, ending the era of the most influential band in history.
