On December 28, 1895, brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière screened ten short films to the public for the first time at the Salon Indien of the Grand Café in Paris, before an audience of 33 people. The show, which included the famous "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat", marked the birth of cinema as a public spectacle and launched the history of the seventh art.

On December 28, 1908, a devastating magnitude 7.1 earthquake destroyed the city of Messina in Sicily and the nearby Reggio Calabria across the strait. Between 75,000 and 200,000 people were killed, making it the deadliest earthquake in modern European history. The city of Messina was completely razed and rebuilt from scratch in the following years.
