What happened on December 21?
On December 21, 1988, a bomb destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 259 passengers and crew on board and 11 people on the ground. The attack, the deadliest in British history, was attributed to Libyan agents. Libya accepted responsibility in 2003 and paid compensation to the victims' families.
On December 21, 1620, the Pilgrims of the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock on the coast of Massachusetts, where they would found the first permanent settlement in New England. The 102 colonists, Puritan separatists fleeing religious persecution in England, had signed the Mayflower Compact, considered the first democratic document in North America.
On December 21, 1937, Disney Studios premiered Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Los Angeles, the first feature-length animated film in history. The film industry had predicted failure, nicknaming the project "Disney's Folly". The film grossed 8 million dollars — a fortune during the Great Depression — and won a special Academy Award.
