On December 18, 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, officially abolishing slavery throughout American territory. The amendment was the legal corollary of the Civil War and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, though the real equality of African Americans would not be guaranteed in law until the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
December 18 was declared by the UN as International Migrants Day, commemorating the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families in 1990.
