India, about to gain independence from the *British Empire*, was building its democratic foundations while still under colonial rule. *Jawaharlal Nehru* would become Prime Minister.

He did so to marry American divorcée *Wallis Simpson*, a union the government and the Anglican Church rejected. He passed the throne to his brother, the stuttering *George VI*, father of the future Queen *Elizabeth II*.
