History also happened on this day

🎵1980

On December 8, 1980, former Beatle John Lennon was shot dead outside the Dakota building in New York by disturbed fan Mark David Chapman. Lennon was 40 and had just released the album Double Fantasy after five years of silence. His death shocked the world and turned Central Park — opposite his home — into a spontaneous shrine that persists today as Strawberry Fields.

⚔️1941

On December 8, 1941, one day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the US Congress declared war on the Empire of Japan with a single dissenting vote — that of pacifist congresswoman Jeannette Rankin. It was the official entry of the US into World War II, the country whose participation would decide the outcome of the conflict in both theatres of operations.

1854

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, defining that Mary was conceived without original sin. It is one of only two dogmas proclaimed ex cathedra in the history of the Catholic Church. The dogma was received with enthusiasm by the faithful and with reservations by more critical theologians.
