On December 1, 1955, African American seamstress Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, and was arrested. Her act of civil disobedience triggered the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott, led by young Martin Luther King Jr., which became the first major triumph of the civil rights movement.
On December 1, 1959, twelve countries signed the Antarctic Treaty in Washington, committing Antarctica to exclusively peaceful and scientific use. The treaty, which currently has 56 signatories, prohibits military activities and the exploitation of natural resources on the continent and establishes freedom of scientific research for all nations.
On December 1, 1988, the first World AIDS Day was held, a WHO initiative to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which by then had already killed more than 100,000 people worldwide. The red ribbon became the symbol of solidarity with those affected. Today December 1 is the world's most recognised health awareness day.
