On December 3, 1967, South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the first human heart transplant in history at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The recipient, Louis Washkansky, survived 18 days. The operation inaugurated a new era of medicine, and today heart transplants are a routine procedure with survival rates exceeding ten years.
On December 3, 1984, a gas leak at the Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India, released clouds of methyl isocyanate over the sleeping city. Between 3,800 and 8,000 people died instantly and more than 500,000 were exposed. The Bhopal disaster was the worst industrial accident in history and its health effects persist to this day.
On December 3, 1992, British engineer Neil Papworth sent the first SMS in history from a computer to the mobile phone of Richard Jarvis, a Vodafone UK executive. The message simply read "Merry Christmas". Papworth was 22 years old. SMS took several years to become popular, but went on to become the most widely used form of communication in history before WhatsApp.
