On November 17, 1989, the Czechoslovak communist police brutally suppressed a student demonstration in Prague, triggering the Velvet Revolution. In the following weeks, millions of people took to the streets in peaceful protests that forced the regime to negotiate. On December 29, playwright Václav Havel was elected president.
On November 17, 1970, the Soviet probe Luna 17 landed on the Moon and deployed the first lunar rover in history, Lunokhod 1. The robot, remotely controlled from Earth by a five-person team, travelled 10.5 kilometres over ten months, transmitting thousands of photographs and invaluable scientific data about the lunar surface.
On November 17, 1869, the Suez Canal was officially inaugurated — the artificial waterway linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, cutting thousands of kilometres off the maritime route between Europe and Asia.
