What happened on November 24?
On November 24, 1859, English naturalist Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species", the work that established the theory of evolution by natural selection. The book, which sold out its first edition on the day of publication, transformed biology and humanity's understanding of its place in nature forever. It is one of the most influential books in history.
On November 24, 1974, paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson discovered in Ethiopia the most complete skeleton of an Australopithecus afarensis known up to that point: Lucy, a hominid that lived 3.2 million years ago. The discovery revolutionised the understanding of human evolution. The name comes from the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", which was playing at the camp.
On November 24, 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin of President Kennedy, was shot dead by businessman Jack Ruby in the parking garage of the Dallas Police Headquarters in front of television cameras. Oswald's murder before he could stand trial fed decades of conspiracy theories about Kennedy's death.
