On November 27, 1095, Pope Urban II concluded the Council of Clermont with a sermon calling Christian knights of Europe to undertake a crusade to retake Jerusalem from the Seljuk Turks. The crowd responded with shouts of "Dieu le veut!" ("God wills it!"). The First Crusade set out the following year.
On November 27, 1895, Swedish chemist and inventor Alfred Nobel signed his final will in Paris, donating the bulk of his fortune — accumulated through the invention of dynamite — to create the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. Nobel died the following year and the prizes were first awarded on December 10, 1901.
On November 27, 1912, Spain and France signed the Treaty of Fez, which divided Morocco into two zones of influence and established the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco in the north of the country. The agreement was the starting point of Spanish presence in North Africa, which would include control of Ceuta, Melilla and Western Sahara.
