On November 13, 2015, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic State struck Paris: at the Bataclan concert hall, on café terraces, and near the Stade de France stadium. 130 people were killed and more than 400 were injured, in the deadliest terrorist attack on French soil since World War II.
On November 13, 1990, British engineer Tim Berners-Lee presented his superior at CERN with a formal proposal for what would become the World Wide Web. The document, titled "Information Management: A Proposal", described a hypertext system for sharing information among scientists. His boss's response was: "Vague, but exciting."
On November 13, 1850, Romantic composer Robert Schumann — one of the key figures of German musical Romanticism — celebrated his fortieth birthday in Leipzig, where he was at the height of his creative powers. Known for works such as Carnaval, his Piano Concerto and the song cycle Dichterliebe, he would be committed to an asylum three years later.
